Vostok1520 enjoys highest level of fail-safe performances among operators

“According to data from Russian Railways’ Design and Construction Bureau, Vostok1520 had the highest figure for fail-safe performances among all operators in 2018,” said Deputy CEO for Technical Development Dmitry Losev at the Operation and Repair of Freight Cars conference in Moscow on 16 April.

The average mileage of cars in the company’s fleet, counting from the completion of construction, has surpassed 400,000 km, with the highest figure approaching 900,000. Data collection shows that cars which have completed over 800,000 km have been uncoupled for current maintenance 3.3 times on average and have not yet been taken in for overhaul. It has been possible to achieve this strong performance thanks to an expertly designed repair system, which is implemented by way of in-service support through a car repair company that carries out a range of car repair services, creating and maintaining the turnover of spare parts, as well as monitoring cases of failure and damage to cars. This allows the operator to focus on its main activity of organising transportation processes.

Dmitry Losev stressed that reducing the cost and number of repairs is an important task for the operator company. Experience shows that after cars achieve a mileage of around 350,000 – 500,000 km, the majority are uncoupled for current repairs, because of the need to round off the rolling surface of the wheelsets. That is to say, current repairs are being carried out for mundane operational reasons. Carrying out preventative measures for a car over its 500,000 km cycle therefore becomes expedient in order to ensure balanced servicing over the car’s entire life-cycle. This approach to repairs reduces the number of stops the car will make so that its wheelset can be rounded off and helps to prevent the occurrence of other faults during the car’s overhaul period.

Continuous monitoring of cars’ performance shows that bogie parts with increased wear resistance can be used to reduce depot repair costs. These conclusions were drawn after a routine inspection of the cars that were being monitored, after they have achieved a mileage of 700,000 km. The minimum mileage of each of the individual parts stands at 1.3 million km, and many of the parts will be able to withstand a mileage multiple times higher. This observation makes it possible to address the issue of replacing parts at a later date and lays the foundations for cheaper depot repairs. Nevertheless, concrete decisions can only be made after the completion of the cars’ performance monitoring programme.
