Number of unscheduled repairs on network can and must be reduced

As part of a round table on ‘Developing the Car Repair Network: Improving Interaction Between Market Participants’, which was held at the Gudok publishing house on 19 September 2019, representatives of Russian Railways and market participants discussed trends in the repairs market, including measures to reduce car uncoupling. 

The Deputy CEO for Technical Development at Vostok1520 Dmitry Losev discussed the effective use of existing resources when it comes to expensive parts such as wheels, bearings, and the wear-resistant elements of bogies for next-generation cars. In September, Tikhvin-produced cars underwent a routine commissioning inspection at the Ulan-Ude repair depot as part of a field performance programme.It showed that a number of wear-resistant elements can be guaranteed to work without being replaced until overhaul repairs, while certain elements can last for the entire life-cycle of the car.

A wheelset running under a gondola car can withstand a mileage of at least 1.2 million km. The conclusion of the commission was that, after running for 500–600,000 km, the car must undergo servicing, or TO-3, in order to conduct an audit of the automatic coupling and brake equipment. This makes it possible to increase the overhaul mileage to 1.2 million km. At this distance, the joints and car parts will be used to the fullest possible extent. 

This approach upholds the efforts of Russian Railways to reduce the number of instances of uncoupling during maintenance and repairs. Since 2018, Vostok1520 has been putting this into practice. “When servicing a car with a mileage of 500–600,000 km, we round off all wheelsets and analyse the overall condition of the car. Our assessment is that after this process, the car will be good for another 250–300,000 km,” said Dmitry Losev. If the car manufacturer makes amendments to the repair documentation and increases the mileage at which the scheduled repair will take place to 1.2 million km, with a requirement to undergo an intermediary TO-3 servicing and repair process, this will have the effect of reducing the number of maintenance callouts. “The experience of operating a fleet today suggests that it is possible, achievable and cost-effective,” the top manager added. Fleet owners will be able to make the best possible use of their expensive car parts and significantly relieve the network of unscheduled repairs.
